Share with a larger audience?

Ed B. shared an interesting idea today. Ed suggests that I consider linking this WordPress blog to my Facebook account. That way, all my Facebook friends will be able to effortlessly keep up with any new blog postings.

To be honest, that will require me stepping outside of my personal comfort zone, as I don’t usually publicize my projects. I tend to prefer working in solitude and seek perfection, before showing the fruits of my labor to others. So far, I’ve only shared the link to this blog site to a few friends at work. I admit that the idea of my Facebook friends being able to see my geekier side makes me a bit nervous.

As it turns out, Kinetic is more than just a software experiment…it is turning into an experiment in personal growth, as well.

The fine art of yak shaving

I hate shaving the yak.

Saturday, 9:30am: I decide to test-drive MarsEdit‘s offline blog editing features. Well the latest MarsEdit only works on Mac OSX Snow Leopard. I figure an OS upgrade is long overdue anyhow, so I reluctantly upgrade. Post-reboot, I wait for an additional 1.12GB in MacOS software updates to complete. I discover that the Ruby version on my machine is no longer 1.9.1; it has somehow reverted to 1.8.6. I use MacPorts to manage the development tool installations, but the Snow Leopard version of MacPorts needs Xcode 3.2.1, not the 3.1.2 installed with Snow Leopard. Ugh. It takes me awhile but I finally hunt down a copy of Xcode 3.2.1, which makes it possible to re-install MacPorts. I then re-install all the ports which were working before, including Ruby 1.91.

Saturday, 12:20pm: I re-learn an old lesson:

My sketchy purchase: a Wacom Bamboo

All of my co-workers know: Without a whiteboard marker, I’m like a one-legged man in an ass-kicking contest.

I have to scribble in order to get my ideas across.

On Monday, I had an aha! moment: Even moreso than readership or investment funding–this blog needs diagrams! It makes sense, right?

So, I picked up a Wacom Bamboo tablet. My sketches look clumsy and I still can’t get pressure-sensitivity to work with the MacOS version of GIMP (even after installing the latest version of the X11). Other than that, it seems to work fine.

So look for my clumsy sketches in future blog posts. In the meantime, I’ll start getting ready for the new readers and eager VC investors.
